Web sites with many topics related to early childhood and parenting

Zero To Three  http://www.zerotothree.org  This website has a wide variety of information about infants and toddlers for parents and professionals alike. 

Search Engine for Parents, Caregivers and Educators  http://www.kinderstart.com  This site is the Largest Indexed Directory and Search Engine on the Web for Parents and Caregivers. Go there to find excellent information for parents and teachers. This site has a pre-school section. You’ll find lots of games and free lesson plans.

Principles of Parenting  http://www.humsci.auburn.edu/parent/index.html This site is full of articles designed to teach parenting.  The articles are clear and easy to understand.  A great resource!  The publications in this series are part of a total parenting program emphasizing understanding, guiding, and encouraging children. The publications are four to eight pages long and use simple statements of principles along with stories and illustrations to communicate the principles. Teaching guides are being developed to accompany each unit.

Special Needs

Schwab Learning   http://www.schwablearning.org    This site is full of articles and information to help parents and teachers who work with children with learning differences.   If you’re really interested in this topic, they will send you a weekly newsletter with article summaries which you can read (if you have the time). 

Early Literacy, Pre-Reading

The Children’s Literature Web Guide http://www.ucalgary.ca/~dkbrown/index.html  Full of links, reviews and other goodies for people interested in children’s books.  Well organized – not commercial.  Also has a list of awards for children’s books.

Barefoot Books   http://barefootbooks.com/   Children's books from around the world.

No Child Left Behind - Parent's Page  http://www.nclb.gov/parents  This site gives parents information about pre- reading activities, and what a good early reading program should look like.

Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators and Service Providers:  http://school.discovery.com/schrockguide/index.html  This page, which is part of the Discovery web site, is a categorized list of sites useful for enhancing curriculum and professional growth. It is updated often to include the best sites for teaching and learning.   It’s created by a REAL teacher and is CHOCK full of links to other web sites, teaching ideas and tools and many other goodies.  This page links, in turn, to other pages, such as a parents page.  This site is geared for elementary-age children, starting with grade K.

National Institute for Literacy’s home page:  http://novel.nifl.gov/  The web page is a fantastic resource for anyone connected with the literacy field.  Check out their LINCS page to find pointers to great web sites about all subjects.

The California Child Care Resource and Referral Network www.rrnetwork.org  This website has information for parents (what to look for in finding quality childcare, and the resources available)  and childcare providers (how to become licensed, training, other resources).

The National Association for the Education of Young Children:  www.naeyc.org   This website has information for early childhood educators on a variety of issues:  policy, accreditation, and professional development.  It has a section for parents on locating accredited child care, and links to books, brochures, etc. 

The California Association for the Education of Young Children:  http://www.caeyc.org  This site has information for providers on events, public policy issues, and marketplace resources.

Connect For Kids  http://www.connectforkids.org   This is an outstanding site and covers an amazing amount of research, advocacy tips, articles and more.  Every week you'll find new things on the Connect for Kids home page. Here’s just one week’s worth of articles: "How Do We Heal a "Broken Child?", "Helping Families Leave Poverty, Not Just Welfare, Behind", "Ideas for Summer Reading: Connect for Kids Book Reviews", "All Kids Grieve."   You can sign up to receive and excellent weekly newsletter from them. 

KIDS COUNT   http://www.aecf.org/kidscount/  Census data, online databases, publications, special reports, and more.  Excellent web site, full of detailed information, especially if you need statistics. 

Children Now  http://www.childrennow.org/  Children Now works to improve the quality of news and entertainment media both for children and about children's issues.  This is another good source for articles and information.  It has an excellent “Links Directory” that gives information about hundreds of web pages relating to children’s well-being.

Child Care Law Center  www.childcarelaw.org  Policy and Legal Information on child care issues.

Starting Early, Starting Smart http://www.jointogether.org/sa/resources/database/reader/0,1884,549217,00.html  This is a link that tells about a research project on how to help kids 0-7 avoid future substance abuse.  The link will give you an opportunity to download a PDF document.
